Charlie Chaplin wrote the music for many of his own films. Lyrics were often added to these romantic tunes and the songs went to to become huge hits. Producer/guide Fred Flaxman presents four different versions of "Smile" from Modern Times, plus music from The Gold Rush, Limelight, City Lights, A King in New York, A Dog's Life, and The Countess from Hong Kong.

Performances are by Michel Villard and his Orchestra, I Salonisti, Itzhak Perlman with the Boston Pops conducted by John WIlliams, pianist Susanne Kessel, tenor David Hobson with Sinfonia Australis conducted by Guy Noble, and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis.

Hello and welcome to Compact Discoveries. I’m your guide, Fred Flaxman. The music in the background is called “Smile.” It is from the Charlie Chaplin movie, Modern Times. Can you name the composer? Well it was Charlie Chaplin himself. He not only produced this classic film, directed it, and starred in it -- he also wrote the tunes for the film score. And he not only did this for Modern Times, he did this for many of his films. So stay with me for the next hour and we’ll enjoy together “The Music of Charlie Chaplin.”
