Violinist Geoff Nuttall's performances and witty stories continue to light up the Dock Street Theatre. Nuttall leads the newly-formed "Dock Street Theatre Dance Ensemble" to play a Strauss waltz done up by Arnold Schoenberg.                                                         Spoleto Chamber Music, Concert IV                                        

 

The fourth concert in the 2010 Chamber Music Series at the Dock Street Theatre features Director of Chamber music Geoff Nuttall introducing a hard-to-grasp “modern” work…composed by Beethoven in 1825! Not to mention some Strauss a la Schoenberg….and an unusual quartet by Anton Arensky that swaps out the second violin for a second…cello.

Flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, clarinetist Todd Palmer,  pianist Pedja Muzijevic, and the St. Lawrence String Quartet (Geoff Nuttall, Scott St. John, Lesley Robertson, and Christopher Costanza) play Arnold Schoenberg’s version of Johann Strauss II’s “Kaiser Waltz.”

After their “guided tour,” the members of the St. Lawrence String Quartet offer a riveting

performance of Beethoven’s final string quartet utterance.

Music 3: Arensky’s tribute to Tchaikovsky                                                                 30:00

Violinist Daniel Phillips, violist Hsin-yun Huang, and cellists Christopher Costanza and Alisa

Weilerstein, play the unusual and tuneful two-cello Quartet, Op. 35, written by Anton Arensky

In tribute to his mentor, Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky.

            

Music 4: Beethoven’s 8th from Spoleto                                                                       27:30

            From Sunday night’s concert by the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra at Gaillard Auditorium,

              Emmanuel Villaume conducts the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8

              In F.  The concert was Villaume’s last as Music Director for Opera & Orchestra at Spoleto.

            

Music: 5: The Marriage of Figaro: Completing the Circle                                          5:00

As an encore, Emmanuel Villaume led the orchestra in the Overture to the Marriage of Figaro. Villaume’s very first performance at the Spoleto Festival, 20 years ago, was in the pit at the Dock Street Theatre, conducting Renée Fleming in a memorable production of the Mozart opera.

 

Music: 6: More Mozart, con Flauto                                                                                    7:00

From a CD called “Mozart in Love,” Paula Robison substitutes her flute for the voice in two of the beloved arias from “The Marriage of Figaro;” Two of the signature arias from Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” – The first, “Voi che sapete,” and “Non so piu cosa son.”  She’s joined by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.   [NOT AVAILABLE FOR ON-DEMAND STREAMING]

 

Music: 7: Fields of Gold                                                                                                  3:00

The Antioch Chamber Ensemble, in a performance at St. Philip’s Church in Charleston, offers a haunting arrangement and performance of the song “Fields of Gold” by Sting.
