Did you know tobacco saved Virginia and is probably the reason why we had a revolution with England rather than France or Spain? This is my favorite kind of piece: a drop in that is short and entertaining, yet full of information from authoritative sources. Good piece for the 4th of July weekend when the focus is on the USA's birthday.

A rather upbeat Marketplace-type piece on how we're not French. In this short 2:30 piece, Producer Nancy King gives background on how all the early colonies had to find something to trade in order to survive. Early colonies might well have been French or Spanish than English if colonies such as Jamestown hadn't found a product they could send back to England and thus keep themselves commercially viable.
