Summary: Europeans who traveled to the thirteen colonies brought numerous strains of Christianity with them, and the freedom of the wild frontier allowed many new sects and congregations to flourish. How did so many forms of belief co-exist, how did religious freedom come to be codified in the Constitution, and how has the faith of our presidents affected the way our country developed?
Dense and extremely informative piece of radio. There are some pieces you can listen to and do other things - this is not one of them. If you are going to listen clear the deck and give it your full attention. I picked up a great deal on the first listening and even more on the second.
I enjoyed listening to this immensely - how much does the general public really know about who the founding fathers were - especially on a religious level? Me, I'm pretty much a secular thinker - but the series - With Good Reason - covers a wide range of topics drawing from the University system in the state of Virginia - what an opportunity! It reminded me of a kind of daily programming that I listen to over here on BBC Radio 4 that puts authors and scholars together to discuss topics from the history of ideas - things you may have abandoned when you left school - I never want to abandon school! I'm pencilling in other parts of the series right now.
I loved this piece. Being a Unitarian myself I love it when people get reminded that many of our founding fathers were deist and unitarians. It goes to great lengths to describe the religious culture in which the founding fathers lived, and discussing some of their specific views.
