Maryland Mining

Not everyone thinks of the Washington area as being rich in minerals. But Maryland was once the world leader in chrome production - and the area boasts quartz, iron and even gold. Amateur geologists Jeff Nagy and Fred Parker spent the last four years documenting the area's resources in their efforts to update the book, 'Minerals of the Washington DC Area.' The pair met Andrew Hiller outside a mine in Marriotsville.
