Piece Description

This is a special edition of The Moth Radio Hour edited by Franny Bastian for PRX with room for fundraising breaks.  This is the first of five hours edited from the Spring 2010 Moth Series.  Use just this one hour, make it a two hour special by adding Hour 2, or keep going for up to five hours of Moth Marathon.
If you program multiple hours, Hour 1 should go first because it includes the founder of The Moth, George Dawes Green, explaining the origins of The Moth and it's name.
Each hour includes a detailed rundown including Timings & Cues, a suggested clock for using the program with a five minute news hole, and pitch points, as well as a content advisory.

Only stations who have broadcast the current season of the Moth Radio Hour, or have notified PRX of plans to do so, may air these Fundraising Programs.

3:00 Pitch Break / Forward promote the hour’s stories

This is a special edition of The Moth Radio Hour from PRX. If you’ve never heard The Moth, you’re in for totally unique radio experience. The Moth presents stories told live on stage without a script or a safety net.

In this hour, you’ll learn how The Moth got its name and hear three compelling stories: Wanda Ballard, one of the original members of The Moth shares a heartwarming story about her dad; a former New York City firefighter tells the story of a tragic fire and the lifelong impact it has had on him; and an author reveals how he gets some of the ideas for his stories.

Since the beginning of time, human beings have connected with each other through story telling. That’s what makes public radio so compelling – whether it’s The Moth, Prairie Home Companion, Fresh Air, or Car Talk – it’s all about telling stories.

Your financial support makes it possible to bring you all the great stories you hear every day on (Station), including The Moth Radio Hour.

14:40 Hr 1 / Segment A = Moth 201 A George Opens / Wanda Bullard

IQ: (Music) From PRX, this is The Moth Radio Hour. I’m George Dawes Green, founder of the Moth and I’ll be your host….

OQ: The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Atlantic Public Media and presented by the Public Radio Exchange. PRX. Org

5:00 Pitch Break:

Like George Dawes Green just said, the glue that holds any relationship together is trust. You trust (station) to bring you the best in public radio every day. And we’re trusting that you will do your part in this relationship and make a pledge.

Coming up, Jenifer Hixson, Senior Producer of The Moth, introduces us to Tom Ziegler (zee-gler), a former New York City firefighter with a powerful story about a tragic fire and the lasting impact it has had on him.

The Moth brings you an incredible variety of voices with stories that make you laugh, shock you, make you cry, and bring you new perspectives on life.

That variety is part of the power of public radio. You help make that possible with your financial support….

6:40 Hr 1 / Segment B = Moth 203 D Tom Ziegler (ZEE-gler) (CONTENT ADVISORY)
IQ: (music up) Next up is another Moth Story Slam Winner, Tom Ziegler (zee-gler). Tom has told a number of stories……”
OQ: This hour is produced by Atlantic Public Media and presented by the Public Radio Exchange. PRX. Org

4:00 Pitch Break:

Tom Ziegler discovered that he felt better when he let the wrenching stories he was holding inside come out. That’s just one reason why storytelling is such a powerful connection between people. You feel better when you share even a troubling story – or you make someone else feel better when you tell a funny story.

The Moth Radio Hour is an example of the powerful connection between you and your radio. It’s the type of program that makes you stop what you’re doing, turn up the volume and ignore everything but the voice you’re hearing.

Help keep great stories like this coming to you on (station). Make a pledge now, before the next story.

Coming up, George Dawes Green, the founder of the Moth, introduces us to Richard Price, an author who came away from an evening in a police car with a great story to tell.

16:31 Hr 1 / Segment C – Moth 201 D Richard Price (SEE CONTENT ADVISORY)

IQ: This is The Moth Radio Hour and I’m George Dawes Green. Some years ago, a bunch of us writers…

OQ: …. Go to our website, The Moth dot org.

4:09 Pitch Break

Richard Price’s story was a great example of how we can make incorrect assumptions – and when you discover the truth, it changes everything.

Maybe you assume that (station) receives a lot of government funding, or that your pledge is too small to make a difference.

Here are the facts: (station) receives (XX%) of its funding from the local community. That makes listener contributions the most important source of funding (station) has.

The Moth Radio Hour is an example of what public support makes possible: programs that change our assumptions about what radio can be. It’s more than news, information or even entertainment – it’s radio that can touch our souls.

When you make a pledge to (station) right now, you help pay for great programs like The Moth Radio Hour.
