Intro: Writer Andrew Hiller doesn't claim to be the world's best singer - hey, he'll be the first to tell you of his knack for forgetting lyrics. But he knows plenty about the transforming power of music.
This commmentary describes the impact of volunteerism and song on a senior citizen who had suffered from multiple strokes, lost her ability to speak, most of her fine motor coordination, and yet somehow sung... and actually sung clearly using the correct words... and what it meant to her to be understood again if only for a moment.
Andrew Hiller is a writer living in Silver Spring. His work has been published in the Washington Post, WAMU 88.5 News, Metro Connection and others. His first novel, A Climbing Stock is due out in 2011.
