Quilting a way though History.

From March to July the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is hosting an exhibition of Quilts from the 1700s to 2010.
I had always presumed that Quilting was an American pastime, a craft born out of necessity from the hardships of pioneer living. I had never stopped to consider that - obviously - the skill had to be learned, passed down from one woman of diligence and thrift to another.
We have a quilt in our home. It was made by Nellie, a woman I never knew. When very young Nellie had been sent to live and work with my grandmother-in-law in Toronto. Nellie stayed with Grandma Murch for years beyond when the total of eight children Grandma raised had left Number One, Vermont Avenue.
