Oakland is home to the fourth largest port in the country. The port processes about $30 billion dollars in imports and exports every year. It also runs the Oakland Airport and 19 miles of Bayside commercial real estate property, including Jack London Square. And although it’s by far the largest industry in the city, the port gets to keep its earnings for itself, thanks to a 1927 law making the port independent of the city. Now, recent property sales by the port have some Oaklanders wondering about the future for Oakland’s waterfront neighborhoods – and whether the port should retain its financial autonomy.
