The United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) is
a dynamic partnership of organizations dedicated to narrowing the gender
gap in primary and secondary education and to ensuring that all children –
girls and boys – have equal access to quality learning. To commemorate
UNGEI's 10 year anniversary and global conference in Dakar, Senegal, 17-20
May, UNGEI has produced a podcast series on three conference themes,
violence, poverty and quality education. The series aims to advance the
discussions on the role of education in promoting gender equality, and
bring different voices together around the barriers to, and strategies for,
achieving education for all. In the final of this series, podcast
moderator Amy Costello spoke about poverty and girls' right to education
with Suaad Allami, Iraqi lawyer, founder of NGO Women for Progress and one
of the 2009 Top 8 Women of International Courage awarded by the State
Department, and Robert Prouty, the Head of the EFA-Fast Track Initiative
Secretariat, a global partnership of donors, civil society groups, donor
agencies and developing countries to ensure that all children in low-income
countries receive quality basic education.
