Recordings from North America's first Degrowth Conference.
Everyone recognizes we are reaching limits - of debt, soil, pollution, climate, population, consumption and fossil fuels.
Meanwhile, billions more humans want to live techno-consumer lives. And justice demands they at least get electricity and enough food.
Why expand until we collapse?
Should we wait for war, famine and disease? Or plan an orderly contraction, starting in the developed world.
The first "degrowth" conference was in Paris, 2008. It was attended by a wide range of academics, activists, and even government officials. The second was in Barcelona this past March. Europe is ahead of North America in realizing the inevitable.
Now a combination of Peak Oil people, environmentalists, and economists organized the first conference in North America, in Vancouver Canada April 29th to May 1st.
Radio Ecoshock recorded one evening session April 30th. Stimulating radio for disturbing times.
Organized by Conrad Schmidt of the Work Less Party (job sharing and reduced work weeks are part of the formula for employment in a shrinking economy). Also described by Toronto York University Professor Peter Victor.
Hosted by Rex Weyler, author, a founder of Greenpeace, and part of the Vancouver Peak Oil Executive.
Featured is Dave Hughes, a Canadian geology and resources expert who is almost the Al Gore of Peak fossil fuels. He gives a worrying overview of energy supplies for the United States and Canada.
More speeches from the Conference, including that of former Shell Oil VP Anita Burke, at http://www.ecoshock.org/downloads/DNeconomy.html
Jack Alpert is from the Stanford Knowledge Integration Laboratory. He'll tell us how many humans could live sustainably on Earth with modern lifestyles. Wait till you hear that number.
A historic development and solution for both the economy and the environment. Studies even show we may lead happier lives with less.
