Transcript for the Piece Audio version of The Whistler
Jeff Hannon: Hi there. My name is Jeffrey Hannon, and I like to whistle.
Jeff begins to whistle a jazzy kind of tune. Whistling fades under Jeff at 0:21
Jeff: The basic answer of why I like to whistle is because I often find that like over the course of my day when I?m walking around, or whatever you know or just puttering around doing stuff, I?m not really thinking verbally. I?m just hearing music in my mind. And so, it just kind of articulates itself that way. It?s just the way I think I guess.
Whistling fades back up with a little foot tapping and then under at 0:49.
Jeff: I started whistling real young, because?and I think this is kind of a generational thing. My father used to whistle all the time, and my grandfather used to whistle. And so I just grew up hearing people whistle. And Al Jolsen. My father used to play Al Jolsen records, and he was a master whistler, and so I grew up hearing it. And so I guess they were role models, whistling role models if you will.
Whistling up. Under at 1:20.
Jeff: The times I like to whistle is like when I?m doing something that is kind of aimless, that you can just zone out and do, like goin for a walk or lifting weights, or fishing. Stuff like that. Activities that allow you to zone out. That?s when I find that I end up whistling a lot.
Whistling up. Foot tapping. Fades out completely under Jeff at 1:50.
Jeff: My favorite way to whistle is just to freestyle. He begins to whistle a different tune. Kind of classical sounding. Pauses. Wait a minute. I?m just trying to get my tone down. Continues whistling this classical piece. This tune fades under Jeff at 2:15.
Jeff: In a manner of speaking I practice, cause I whistle so much. Like if I?m whistling some piece of music that I like, you know ?Waltz for Debbie? by Bill Evans something like that, you know a beautiful little piano gem. I?ll be whistling that tune, and I?ll hear myself hit a wrong note, and I?ll start over again. And I guess so in a manner of speaking, that?s practice.
Classical whistling tune finishes on a trill at 2:38. No whistling under next narration.
Jeff: It?s kind of an extension of who I am as a person. Kinda indicates what kind of person I am and?you know, how I feel about music, and?It says that I, I am absolutely a lover of beauty, and, and you know. And to me it?s an attempt to do something beautiful, just trying to do something beautiful. Whether you succeed or not is almost immaterial, but at least you tried to create some beauty?in the world. Whatever that insignificant thing may be. You know what I mean? That?s what it says about me, that I love beauty. Soft chuckle.
Jazzy whistling tune starts up again. Fades under host outro.
