Soon I’ll be alone in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. The only human being for miles and miles. And I will be there to hear a red wolf howl, not at the moon, but at the setting sun. For the past two days I’ve immersed myself in the red wolves’ habitat and heard story after story about their struggle for survival in this world of man. Now I want their sound, I’m itching to hear it and these are words I’ll regret using by tomorrow morning. But I don’t know that now. All morning I drank coffee, lots of it, ten, twelve cups, maybe more, and I’m fairly buzzing with caffeine. Kim Wheeler has a tendency to talk pretty fast and with caffeine thrumming in my ears her words are sped up, at least to me, a thirty three at forty-five. I’m taking notes and also recording her words. Kim is called the wolf lady. She heads up the Red Wolf Coalition and has told me wondrous things about these animals. Their existence, long threatened by man, is now under attack by the wolves’ own gene pool.
