Every Wednesday night in Salem on Essex Street you’ll see a line outside of the Gulu-Gulu Café waiting for a night of entertainment provided by the musical guests...the locals. Wednesday is Open Mic Night hosted by open mic masters Jeff Savlon and Brian Donnelly. Wednesday has grown to be the most popular night of the week since beginning in January of 2009. Laura Potter, the manager of the café, explained there is a doorman especially for Wednesday night.
The friendly musician-filled environment allows performers to be joined by other regulars of open mic night, sometimes even through spontaneous improvisation. Each performer’s name is drawn to decide the set order, and before heading on stage they must answer the weekly question. After a set of about 10 minutes, or two songs, they will then have to take on the “30- Second Challenge” by performing an extra piece in 30 seconds or less.
The performers on this podcast include (in order) Jason Roulet accompanied by Brian Donnelly, "Foxygyn", "Black Dog Brother" accompanied by Guy Zaccardi on guitar and voacls, "Sunny Jim", and "Honor Havoc" occasionally on the spoons. Commentary is provided by Jeff Savlon, Brian Donnelly, and Laura Potter Walton.
