SRP: A Conversation with a Gay Man in Khartoum

From: Sudan Radio Project
Length: 00:07:05

From the Sudan Radio Project: we hear from a man living in Khartoum about his experiences as a gay citizen of Sudan. Read the full description.

Srp In Sudan, homosexuality is illegal. Since current President Omar El-Bashir reinstated sharia law throughout most of the country in 1991, the legal punishment for homosexual activity ranges from jail time to public lashing to execution. But this has not stopped some Sudanese who identify as gay or lesbian from banding together and working to improve their situation. Chelsea Davis brings us a conversation with with one such individual, a 32-year-old gay Sudanese man who asked that we refer to him as Ahmed.

This piece first aired in "Contention and Conviction" on February 28, 2010.
