Mermanskenkosenki-credit-playingforchange_small Over 50 million views on You Tube to date.  That's the number of times the unique rendition of the song "Stand By Me" has been seen on the internet.  The song featured contributions from street musicians and indigenous performers around the world.  The collaboration inspired a whole CD called Songs Around The World , a DVD called Peace Through Music , a live tour, and a non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation that has raised money to build music schools in developing countries.  Can a project like this really promote peace in a noticeable way?  On this edition of Peace Talks Radio , Carol Boss talks with project co-founders Mark Johnson and Whitney Burditt and two of the music performers - Clarence Bekker from The Netherlands and Mermans Kenkosenki from South Africa.

Playing for Change co-founder Mark Johnson

MARK JOHNSON: Well, the original idea for Playing for Change came about ten years ago. I was working as a recording engineer in New York City. I was on my way to work one day and I was in a subway station, and I saw two monks painted all in white from head to toe, both of the monks were wearing robes. One of them was playing a nylon guitar and the other monk was singing in a language that I didn’t understand, and I imagine most people didn’t understand. But on this one day, I saw about 200 people stop, and nobody got on the train. Everybody is watching this performance, mesmerized and some people have tears in their eyes and jaw dropping and smiling and I looked around at a collection of people who normally just run by each other, and here they are coming together because of this music that we...
