Part One:     VEILED VOICES    Brigid Maher, Professor in the School of Communications at American University, was teaching in Lebanon in 2000, through the turbulent times of revolution and the subsequent elections.  Maher armed her students with video cameras so they could document what they were seeing in the streets.  Her experiences at the time and those of a friend and fellow academic, Dr. Karen Bauer, ultimately led Brigid Maher to direct and produce her latest documentary, Veiled Voices, which follows the lives of 3 Muslim religious leaders re-shaping their faith and their communities.  Ms. Maher introduces us to Huda Habash of Damascus, Syria, Dr. Saayad Salah of Cairo, Egypt and Ghina Hammoud of Beirut, Lebanon.  Our guest today is Brigid Maher discussing the making of Veiled Voices. 

Part Two:     VEILED VOICES     Whether shielded by the hajib or unveiled, Muslim women are edging toward greater roles in Islamic society.  Throughout the Muslim world, women are quietly, patiently forging their own prominence but the greatest barrier may lie in personal status codes or family law.  Ms. Habash, Ms Hammoud and Dr. Salah proudly know where they stand today, where they want to stand tomorrow and where they would like their daughters to stand the day after that.  We return to our conversation with Brigid Maher on her film, Veiled Voices.
