Blues & Beyond #191: The Holmes Brothers at their height; Guitar Shorty tells it like it is
Series: Blues & Beyond
From: WXPN
Length: 00:59:00
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, it's an inspiring new album from The Holmes Brothers called "Feed My Soul." Wendell and Sherman Holmes, and honorary brother Popsy Dixon, after thirty years together as a band, are at the height of their powers on this album, propelled by the energy of Wendell Holmes's successful battle with cancer. We also have an entertaining and provocative new album from Guitar Shorty, called "Bare Knuckle" to open up on this show. Shorty is an exciting artist who combines entertainment with social commentary. We'll also hear a spirited reinterpretation of a Los Lobos song from the Sojourners, three American gospel singers now based in Canada, and a surprise cover of one of Robert Johnson's most problematic songs from Gil Scott-Heron on his first new album in a decade and a half. "Me And The Devil" contains a violent reference that almost every cover -- including Scott-Heron's -- brushes up. We'll look at the song and what may have been behind the original lyric. Plus -- the great pianist McCoy Tyner, with the late Michael Brecker on tenor sax.
