It's a 90-minute drive from Groton-Massachusetts, where Mike Gates lives, to Jenness Beach in New Hampshire.

The 54-year-old software engineer makes the trip a lot over the winter.

(Sound of van door slamming shut)

Mike: …Hands are cold...

The thermometer reads 19 this morning, and it won't be much warmer when we get to the coast.

By most calculations, today is not a beach day.

But if you want to surf in New England on real waves, you've got to come out in this weather.

Nor'easters and other winter storms create some of the biggest swells coastal New Hampshire receives.

(fade up: road noise)

Mike: I never had trouble with motivation if I knew the waves were going to be good. It's like there is gold to be mined. When the waves are perfectly sculpted, it is like magic.
