Charlie Poole (1892-1931), groundbreaking banjoist/songwriter, is known as the "Robert Johnson of country music." With his banjo-fiddle-guitar trio, The North Carolina Ramblers, Poole wrote and recorded country music's first mega-hit single ("Don't Let Your Deal Go Down") and many other classic songs that gave birth to the music of both Bill Monroe and Hank Williams. In this one-hour music intensive documentary, host Laura Cantrell traces the origins of modern country music through the songs of Charlie Poole. Folk music historians Henry "Hank" Sapoznik and Kinney Rorrer make insightful comments on Charlie Poole's career and legacy. Acclaimed banjoists Bela Fleck and Tony Trishka also discuss and demonstrate Poole's innovative banjo technique. Review of Charlie Poole - You Ain't Talkin' to Me
Any station with an interest in any sort of folk, bluegrass or roots format should find "Charlie Poole-You Ain't Talkin' To Me" an excellent way to program an hour and provide a long needed overview of one of the pioneers country music. Here's a man whose music not only sold well, but who took string band music in general and banjo playing specifically forward to pave the way for the eventual development of bluegrass, all the while living as wild a a life as any modern day music Superstar.
As an extra bonus, the show is put out in conjunction with the release of the Columbia Legacy multi-disc set "You Ain't Talkin' To Me-Charlie Poole and the Roots of Country Music", and features the set's cleaned up remastered sound that brings new life to the original 78's.Add commentary and musical demonstrations from Tony Trischka and Bela Fleck to a well researched and entertaining package that will shed light on a neglected figure while clearly explaining the develpoment and context of his contributions. I highly recommend this show.
