In March of last year, the International Criminal Court, or ICC, issued an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The warrant sparked intense controversy between supporters of the Sudanese government and the ICC, with news of the debate saturating the international media. What has been left out of the coverage, however, is the voice of Sudanese citizens--what do law and justice mean for them, in their daily lives? Mina Itabashi takes a closer look at how formal laws fit in with the traditional practices of Sudan.
