Piece Description
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll play songs from the new solo album by super-pianist Hiromi Uehara. Her album "Place To Be" showcases her astonishing playing skills -- of course -- but also shows her musical sensibility in applying those skills, and her talents as a composer. With impressionistic music about the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, a piece for a favorite dessert, and a re-invention of a jazz classic, Hiromi's uncanny aesthetic sense guides her fingers on a high-velocity quest for the essence of her art, while definitely not neglecting the fun element of serious jazz! We'll hear from one of Hiromi's mentors too, the great Ahmad Jamal. Also, the new live album -- and second live album in a row -- from blues singer Tail Dragger. Tail Dragger is entertaining and personable, though there is a tragic page in his past. In 1993 he shot fellow bluesman Boston Blackie. The short time he served for his death -- under two years -- angered Boston Blackie's family and friends. Tail Dragger's supporters say it was self defence. We'll hear one of the few recordings of Boston Blackie in this hour too, and the Howlin' Wolf recording that may have named James Yancy Jones "Tail Dragger."
