This story is an exploration of wedding vows. How do we choose the words we say in a wedding, and what do they mean, if anything, as a marriage evolves? The piece combines the reporter's meditation on the meaning of her own weddings vows, and interviews with four diverse couples, two married, and two in the process of writing their vows.
Generous music tags at head and tail of piece allow for host intro/conclusion.

Review of VowsTimely introspective piece. There are many thoughtful reflections from people of different cultures and religions and from same sex and different sex couples -- they talk about the importance of their vows and the listener gets to hear some of those vows. Ten minutes well spent. Girardeau's use of maps as a metaphor for marriage is beautiful. She writes well - best words, best order. Because June is the traditional month for weddings, this piece would work well now and next month. A saxophone underlies it all. Need I say more? |

By the jagged, downturned rim of sky,
You and I will sleep.
I read this poem to my husband in our wedding ceremony almost 9 years ago.
Why did I choose this poem? I hadn’t recalled what we said in our wedding in a
long time. I mean, we have a child, a house, a dog, health issues, money worries,
…We used to re-read our vows in some romantic spot every anniversary. But as
we’ve grown together and lived our lives, we’ve become less sentimental, more
elemental. We’re here, we’re committed, we love each other, but…What did we
say to each other? Why did I choose that poem?
We just made it through a pretty difficult year, and I found myself wondering
about marriage. It can take you to the edge of the world. A path through an
unknown landscape, fraught with thickets, twists and turns, and forks in the...
