Piece Description
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll hear songs from Eric Bibb from his new album "Booker's Guitar" and allow those songs to take us to others as well. Folk bluesman Eric Bibb is one of the foremost interpreters of traditional blues, and an artist who writes songs about the tradition and its meaning. "Booker's Guitar" came from the flood of emotion he felt after coming into possession of a guitar once owned by bluesman Booker T. Washington White, known as Bukka White (pronounced "Bookah"). We'll hear from Bukka White as well, on both guitar and piano. White was B. B. King's cousin, and he helped his younger cousin get started when King first came to Memphis. Eric Bibb read about it in B. B. King's autobiography; it turns out that Bibb is an avid reader, and his song about reading "Turning Pages" is included in this show too. Another song from Eric Bibb will lead us to a fabulous harmonica player, DeFord Bailey, who was the first black performer for The Grand Old Opry. We'll hear Bailey from 1928. We'll also explore a few songs from the latest in the colorful series of music samplers from Putumayo; this one is called "Putumayo Presents Rhythm & Blues." Sam Moore, Keb' Mo', Lavelle White, and others are on this album. And, we have a piece from Daniel Smith who plays jazz on the bassoon from his new album "Blue Bassoon."
