some combination of the two. It's not 100% true but in old time and
bluegrass songs, especially the old ones, it's usually the women who don't get what they
want: to find Mr. Right, get married, and raise a family. Actually, in songs like Pretty Polly they get a lot more than they bargain for. But the old songs are just the beginning point of an evolution.
