This is a holiday Blues & Beyond show. [There is another holiday Blues & Beyond show available, including Hanukkah material, Blues & Beyond #128]

On this program we'll feature the new album from Carla Bley, "Carla's Christmas Carols." Composer and pianist Carla Bley has enjoyed a long career mostly in the avant garde regions of jazz music, though her new holiday album is more in the musical mainstream -- while still based on her experimental approach as a composer and arranger. The album mixes standards of the season and original material and we'll hear some of each on this show. We've also got some holiday blues from B. B. King, Jerry McCain, and others, some sacred steel from The Campbell Brothers, and a song about eating too much during the holidays... plus jazz -- from Charlie Parker recorded on Christmas Day over half a century ago, and from the patron saint of this program John Coltrane.
