VPR is working with seven public radio stations to coordinate a national project that provides listeners with an in-depth look at the home-state records of the Democratic presidential candidates. VPR engaged a local public radio journalist in the candidates' home states to produce a four-and-a-half-minute news story providing a unique look at each candidate's record. Participating journalists/stations include: Josh Rogers of New Hampshire Public Radio on Wesley Clark); VPR's John Dillon (profiling Howard Dean); Julie Donnelly, formerly of WUNC and now a Boston-based freelance journalist (profiling John Edwards); Matt Sepic of KWMU (profiling Dick Gephardt); WFCR's Susan Kaplan (profiling John Kerry); Vincent Duffy of WKSU (profiling Dennis Kuccinich); WNPR-Connecticut Public Radio's Heather Clayborne (profiling Joe Lieberman); Jenny Lawton of WBEZ-Chicago Public Radio (profiling Carol Moseley Braun) and WNYC's Jim Colgan (profiling Al Sharpton). This nine-part news series will be uploaded December 8, 2003 for station use at no charge.

(Host intro) Today in our series on the home-state records of the Democratic presidential candidates we look at Carol Moseley Braun.
As Jenny Lawton from Chicago Public Radio reports, Braun has been a symbol of both controversy and hope in Illinois.
(Speaker at 1992 victory rally) "She's the first black woman in the United States Senate. Give it up for Carol Moseley Braun!"
(Music: "Celebrate good times, come on!")
(Lawton) In 1992, supporters at Carol Moseley Braun's victory celebration cheered her as a symbol of new opportunity in Illinois. A politician with star-power, Braun's poise and promise won her the admiration of voters throughout the state and across the color line. Her inauguration rang in the so-called "year of the woman in politics."
(Braun, from victory speech) "It's a new day in America. Illinois is sending a woman to the United States Senate."
