PROGRAM NOTES
STRING QUARTET IN D MAJOR, K. 575 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
This piece of music is a wonderful illustration that there is no simple match between an artist’s life and his work. Wonderfully melodic, this quartet is optimistic and buoyant; yet at the time of its composition, Mozart’s life was filled with disappointments with the Viennese musical establishment and increasing financial debt. He died the following year.
Probably reflecting the fact that King Frederick of Prussia who urged the quartet’s composition was an excellent cellist, the cello is dominant throughout the quartet. Mozart, however, also provided important roles for the second violin and viola, the inner voices. A rising arpeggio and a descending scale form the principal theme of the first movement.
