STRING QUARTET #3 IN F MAJOR, OPUS 73
by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
The Third Quartet, written in 1946, mixes the playful and the contemplative. There can be no denying that from the sprightly opening movement to the closing note there is scarcely a bar that could have been written by anyone else. Composed during a particularly dormant period in Shostakovich’s composing life, it is the only work listed for the year 1946 in the catalog of his works. Shostakovich dedicated the Third Quartet to the members of the Beethoven String Quartet, who premiered it in Moscow on December 16, 1946. The Third Quartet is in five movements and is the second longest of the Shostakovich string quartets.
