You know how some people can touch the simplest thing and turn it into something else altogether - and it becomes a moment, a study in unexpected beauty and grace? I get that feeling when I come across a pile of rocks balancing in the sand on a deserted beach. Or when I suddenly really see (it seems like for the first time) the intricate pattern in the grain of a hand hewed wooden oar.
I was struck with this same wonder by the artistry in a photograph of a dead fish. It was the picture of what dinner was going to be that night.
The photo was unadorned - yet beautiful. It was only a record of a fisherman's catch - a King Mackerel and it was taped to the bag of its fillets. It was caught off State Beach - which in itself was unusual since the fish was so far out of its normal habitat - the warm waters off the coast of North Carolina and down to Florida.

Review of A Cook's Notebook: King Mackerel - The Fish That Shouldn't Have Been
The detail in this story is great. The early descriptions of the fish are almost disgusting, however, the same fish becomes very appealing in a space of less than a minute when the narrator is describing cooking it.
