In his drive for self-reliance, Albania’s communist dictator Enver Hoxha set up heavy industry using obsolete technology, with no concern for safety and the environment, and no proper disposal of waste and unused chemicals. When the industry collapsed along with the communist regime, in the early nineties, sites like Porto Romano were left unattended and were looted. Now 5 thousand people live on and around the site, some for 10 years. On just a few square kilometers, Porto Romano embodies the tragedy of Albania’s recent history No one knows how the health of the people has been affected. The programme features one resident and the doctor at the local clinic. Description of the site and details of plans to finally decontaminate the site.
In 2004, the government made a (secret) deal with an Italian company that would have allowed the import of 1,400 tons of waste a day for 29 years. Albanians were insulted and went down on the streets. The slogan was: Albania should not become the trashcan of Europe. Sounds of demo’s, i/v’s with organizers and environmental ngo’s.This was seen as a defining moment in Albanian civil society, the day people said Mjaft- enough.
