Verlaine_small SUGGESTED INTRO: The poet Paul Verlaine {ver-len} is known to many as a leader in the French symbolist movement of the late 19th century. Verlaine's contemporaries formed a circle of Parisian poets collectively known as the Decadents. Members included such well-known figures as Stephane Mallarme and Charles Baudelaire. Verlaine's famous relationship with the young poet Arthur Rimbaud tormented him and encouraged his tendency to drink. After a quarrel, Verlaine shot and wounded Rimbaud, leading to a cycle of imprisonment. For the rest of his life Verlaine wrote poetry and drank between bouts in jail. His work is noted for its candor, expressing deep melancholy in a simple, musical way. Verlaine's Colloque Sentimental {ko-loc sen-tee-men-tall} is read in French and English by Adeline Sire {ah-du-leen seer}. SUGGESTED OUTRO: That was Paul Verlaine's Colloque Sentimental {ko-loc sen-tee-men-tall} read by Adeline Sire {ah-du-leen seer}.
