...That you're a woman far away
is no hindrance to my love:
for the soul, as you well know,
distance and sex don't count...
"Phyllis"
Those who are familiar with Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's poetic portraits, and especially the ones that are addressed to paintings of her friend and patron, the Condesa de Paredes (or Lísida), can naturally assume that she was a lesbian. But Tania Unzueta explains to us that while she would love to claim her as part of the LGBTQ community, she refuses to assign her to a category, since she is not alive for her to say. But if she were, there wouldn't be anything wrong with that, right?
This was aired on Homofrecuencia.

Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz Review
Forgive my broken Spanish.
Tómelo por favor fácil. Déjeme explicar algo a usted: Te quiero.
