Did you know there’s a group of pharmacists dedicated specifically to the needs of seniors? The American Association of Consultant Pharmacists, based in Alexandria, Virginia, includes more than 7,000 pharmacists who focus on seniors and the needs of patients in specific environments including hospice care, nursing facilities and those being cared for at home.

Dr. Judith Beizer, a pharmacist and president of the association, joins us today to talk about her work, along with Dr. Nicole Brandt, who is described by the association as “one of the emerging young leaders in geriatric pharmacy.”

Then ... remember late last summer, when a gallon of gas hovered around $4? Stephen Goss, chief actuary of the Social Security Administration, joins us to explain why that spike is one of the reasons social security benefits next year won’t include a COLA, or cost-of-living adjustment.

And while social security benefits won’t rise, Medicare premiums will. Tricia Neuman, vice president and director of the Medicare Policy Project at the Kaiser Family Foundation, also is in the studio to tell us who- and who won’t- pay for that increased premium out-of-pocket.

Goss and Neuman also discuss President Obama’s proposal to give seniors $250 each to make up for the lack of COLA next year.
