Hallowe'en has much older, mostly forgotten roots in the Celtic tradition. This night is the eve of the new year, a sacred time to honor ancestors and light fires to cleanse the old and welcome the new. Both sacred and secular traditions have been layered on this ancient celebration. With my boys, I will be lighting a fire and offering prayers of thanks for the ancestors who have preceded us, who have tended the sacred fires that have passed life to life, and hand to hand, to the here and now.
