Part One: SURVIVAL IN SUDAN The carnage in the Darfur region of Sudan began in 2003 and by the following year, even President George W. Bush was calling the slaughter a "genocide". Before a peace agreement was signed in 2006, Sudan's Khartoum government and government-backed militias collectively known as the Janjaweed had murdered some 300,000 Darfurians and displaced an additional 2.7 million people. Today we get an update on conditions in Sudan now from the President of the Save Darfur Coalition, Jerry Fowler.
Part Two: SURVIVAL IN SUDAN While there is a fragile peace agreement in place and the violence is greatly reduced, there are two issues ahead Sudanese will be dealing with, for better or worse. The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of President Omar al Bashir and in 2011, the people of southern Sudan will get to vote on independence. We continue our discussion with Jerry Fowler on these and other issues facing the people of Sudan today.
