Sammy Marques, descended from Portuguese seamen, was expatriated from his native America by his missionary father. When he returned stateside he made sure he’d never have to leave his homeland again. After high school he enlisted in the Navy, with dreams of being stationed overseas, attached to the American embassy in a Portuguese-speaking nation. He thought this was reasonable since he was already proficient in Portuguese. The Navy thought otherwise. They wanted Sammy to study Thai language.
