PROGRAM NOTES

STRING QUARTET IN E FLAT MAJOR, OPUS 74 HARP
By Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Beethoven completed the E Flat Major Quartet in the autumn of 1809, as well as the Emperor Concerto, during a stay at Baden near Vienna. Although the work does not push forward into new and unexplored regions like most of Beethoven’s previous quartets, it demonstrates a consolidation of previous accomplishments in quartet writing.

The subtitle Harp was not Beethoven’s but was added later. It refers to the pizzicato accompaniment figures in the first movement, considered of minor musical importance, although quite probably shocking to listeners in the early 1800s. The Quartet was given its first performance at the home of Beethoven’s patron and friend, Prince von Lobkowitz in the fall of 1809. It was published in 1810.
