PROGRAM NOTES
STRING QUARTET IN D MAJOR, OPUS 44 # 1
By Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
During 1837 and 1838, when he was composing the Op. 44 quartets, Mendelssohn was enjoying a time of personal happiness and international recognition, both as a composer and conductor. His marriage on March 28, 1837, and the birth of his son less than one year later gave him a great deal of pleasure. Highly esteemed as a composer, his every piece was eagerly awaited and immediately performed. And the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, which he had been conducting since 1835, had become known as the best orchestra in Germany.
Following an arduous performing and touring schedule, Mendelssohn nevertheless managed to complete the three quartets of Op. 44 and dedicate them to the Crown Prince of Sweden. As is the case with his earlier quartets, the opus numbers do not conform to the order of composition; they...
