PROGRAM NOTES
STRING QUARTET IN B FLAT MAJOR, OPUS 18 #6
By Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
The quartets of Opus 18 were written between 1798 and
1800 and were published in 1801. The B-flat Quartet begins straightforwardly with a sonata-form structure. The opening motif of the first violin, echoed by the cello, is square-cut but bouncy. The second subject takes turns varying the mode: first major, then minor. The development section deals primarily with the first motif and includes two measures of silence, one near the beginning and one at the close. The first comes as a surprise; the second brings repose in anticipation of the return of the opening material.
The slow movement is in ABA form with coda. The Scherzo presents a puzzle of syncopation, there is no clear definition of the announced 3/4 meter until we reach the second section.
