A Farmer’s Market.
The Sunday Feria de Mataderos is as much a market for the Argentine tourists as for visitors from abroad. But during the week, from Monday through Thursday, this is also the cattle market for the farmers of Argentina. It is the biggest cattle market in the world. In each four day week 45,000 head of cattle are bought and sold in the stock yards though up until the nineteen seventies 45,000 cattle exchanged hands on each of the four days.
Farmers start their day early and to be at the market on time I left the apartment at 6.30 in the morning. The lady setting up her newspaper kiosk at the corner of Chile and Defensa was wrapped up warmly in her fur coat. I wondered which had come first, the fur coat or the newspaper stand. The number 17 bus was almost empty as were the streets heading out of the city and the bus picked up a speed worthy of a Walmart truck...
