Piece Description

A poem about being a substitute teacher. The music was composed by LiNCOLN of Pensacola, Florida (contact info: arroway@yahoo.com). This piece has been broadcast on some radio stations that carry occasional spoken word programming, although I honestly don't know which ones. It was a very informal procedure.

Review of Substitute Teaching (Poem)

This piece blew my head off! I work in a school so I absolutely laughed like a loon! I liked it so much that I went back and re-read the reviewing guidelines and Reviewing Terms to make sure that I can say the two words that best sum up the piece and immediately came to mind.

Those two words are:
HOT DAMN!

Substitute Teaching Review

How un-politically correct is this in the age of school shootings? Well, let's just say his students are described as "12 year old sociopaths" who ask to play with live ammo. Yeah, definitely worth a listen if you like mildly conservative, interestingly derranged poetry.

Review of Substitute Teaching (Poem for National Poetry Month)

Paul McDonald's piece is an "ear-catcher." People came in from other rooms to catch what I was listening to. Very brief, hard-hitting and funny, this piece captures well the experience of working with adolescents in a school setting. Having experienced similar situations, the percussion beats add to the piece because that's pretty much what one feels like during a day of substitute teaching. Since many public radio listeners are involved in the educational process in some way, this piece should fit in well after the broadcasting of serious educational pieces.

Was that an explosion
Or did a chair hit the ceiling?

Who needs capital punishment?
Sentence the condemned
To some god-awful middle school
In the eternal seventh grade
Where sugar-buzzed gnomes
Dive bomb off the wall

Hell,
A prisoner would beg to be injected
Electrocuted
Gassed
Shot
Hanged
Guillotined
Even fed to wild piranha
Than endure THIS place
Where no one listens
Or brings their pencil
And heckles you like a circus mutant...
