Piece Description

This summer, school administrators in districts across the country will have to face some tough budget decisions. Along with determining how many teachers to lay off and whether to shorten the school year, many will have to decide which programs get cut. Youth Radio’s Austin De Rubira reports on the unusual way Oakland’s school district is adapting its science program to tough economic times.

Do it Yourself!~

This story is an ode to the-do-it yourself mentality that people will need to employ in order to move towards a more sustainable economy and world.
I am also inspired by the dedicated teachers in this story who care about their students enough to give them a fulfilling experience.
Great production job and voicing~

Hints at Deeper Issue

Although on the surface this story is about solving a budget problem, I also appreciated hearing the deeper tension that faces many teachers. Teach to the book or teach the true subject?
While the administrator is concerned that time spent raising money-saving crayfish takes away from book time, the teacher knows that real-life experiences are worth it.
The children's voices are fun and the production is tight.
I like this story because it leaves room for the listener to continue thinking.
