PROGRAM NOTES
FIVE PIECES FOR STRING QUARTET
By Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942)
Schulhoff’s family were German speaking Jews, living in Prague. He was a child prodigy who became a formidable pianist, studying at the Prague Conservatory, Vienna conservatory, where he worked with Max Reger, and also the Leipzig and Cologne Conservatories. He also had some lessons with Debussy. Yet, despite his years of immersion in the formal world of the academy, he became a true 20th century man. He embraced the new forms in both popular and classical music. At the same time he was building a career as a powerful virtuoso and playing the music of Scriabin, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Hindemith and Bartok. His life and work are extremely interesting especially his joining the Dada art movement of World War I.
