Piece Description

We'll check out some jazz on the flute on this program. Nicole Mitchell plays flutes and piccolos, composes music, and leads various ensembles. On her new album "Renegades" she works with a string section called The Black Earth Strings, in what could be called jazz meeting chamber music." We'll hear from some other jazz greats on the flute, including Herbie Mann, and the incomparable Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who played nose flute as well as standard flute -- not to mention saxophones -- and often played several instruments at once. We'll also hear Carlos Ward on alto flute with pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.

Plus: we have new blues from a family band that plays homemade instruments, The Homemade Jamz Blues Band, who have just released their second album -- & a new recording from veteran Mississippi bluesman Big Jack Johnson. Also: a great jazz standard gets reinvented by a high-energy duo who play acoustic guitars, Rodrigo y Gabriela.
