Schools Ancient and Modern.
The invitational announcement read ‘for leavers of St. Catherine’s School from 1955 to 1965’. I put it to one side with a smile and a sigh and thought no more about it - until - another old girl wrote from Montreal, “Are you going?” “Well maybe. If I am there.” I replied, and then somehow we were there and the day came and we were zipping down the motor way in a bright yellow Mini Copper as if it was the 1960’s all over again. Driving through the London streets among the heavy traffic with attitude in the middle of another tube strike was as terrifying as the motorway once we reached it. Eventually we made it to the turn off for Guildford. And there, after a pit stop I gave the one wrong direction that led us around and not through the city as old roads were remembered only in hindsight. It was well past the welcome time of eleven a.m. when we arriv...
