Piece Description
If there is such a thing as avant garde blues, it's mostly thanks to Otis Taylor. In Taylor's surrealistic songs, images surface from unseen regions wrapped in melodies and arrangements that evolve slowly through repetition much in the manner of the works of minimalist composers. Taylor's new album "Pentatonic Wars & Love Songs" offers more haunting stories and images, and some Taylor trademarks ... a cornet at oblique harmonic angles to the melody, a piano embellishing a single chord, above poly-rhythmic drumming, behind lyrics whose very repetition makes them unsettling. Cornet player Ron Miles, pianist Jason Moran, and Taylor's daughter Cassie Taylor, who sings ethereally and plays bass, add combine with others to create Taylor's unique "trance blues" sound and enhance the effect of his haunting lyrics.
