Piece Description

In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, a remembrance of the late great Queen Of The Blues Koko Taylor. Koko died this past June 3rd at age 80. She was clearly the most important female blues singer on the planet, and to many fans, just the finest living blues singer period. Her passing may well mark the end of an era that we could call the "post post-war" blues period, coming afer years when the blues was in eclipse, and coinciding with the rise of the label she was with for over 30 years, Alligator Records. We'll hear her classic hit for Chess Records, "Wang Dang Doodle," which was the last great blues hit for that famed label, and her very first record, that she didn't even know was being recorded at the time -- plus a duet with B. B. King.

Also on this show, new jazz from the Dizzie Gillespie All-Star Big band, and a classic from the band's namesake, and Coltrane reinterpreted by tenor sax player Eric Alexander.

promos included: promo-koko-taylor for this program; promo-bbking for the next program, which will feature the new album "Live At The BBC" by B. B. King.
