Composer John Corigliano grew up surrounded by music. His father was the concertmaster (1st violinist) with the New York Philharmonic for 23 years, during and after the Leonard Bernstein era. "The idea of performing really wasn't comfortable for me because I used to watch my father get nervous before a concert and then walk on that stage with the musicians playing and then next morning, read reviews of what he did.  And the idea of doing that myself was inconceivable to me.  At least when I write a piece of music and I have that tension and anxiety, when I'm finished I have a piece of music.  So I think I'll stick to composing."
