Lester Blackiston, The Pirate of Shockoe Bottom, Part 6
Series: A Grain of Sand
From: Charles McGuigan
Length: 00:29:31
Pirates love the water. It’s their sustenance, it’s their highway, it’s their haven. Lester Blackiston loved the water.
As a matter of fact, I didn’t really get to know Lester until I became a first mate on charter boats first in Reedville, then in Deltaville and later for two long summers in Pirate’s Cove on the Outer Banks. At Pirate’s Cove I worked a number of charters as first mate for Lester. This was right around the time my father got sick. More of that much later.
It’s a Friday night in Rubin Peacock house in downtown Richmond. We’re drinking Jack Daniels and Rubin’s liberal in the pouring and he tells me one the best Lester stories I’ve ever heard. It concerns a haphazard trip aboard an un-seaworthy ship with Lester as her captain. Rubin describes the good ship Shanty.
